George Lucas talks about R2D2 and C3PO from Revenge of the Sith
"The entire Star Wars saga is
really told from the perspective
of R2D2 and C3PO as is alluded
to in Return of the Jedi when
C3PO informs the Ewoks about
the heroes adventures up to
the point of the heroes meeting
the Ewoks.
These two droids have
personalities, which are
diametrically opposed to each
other. R2D2 is the fearless and
intrepid warrior, who is
constantly rescuing the heroes
from certain doom.
In contrast, C3PO spends all his
time being constantly terrified
at the action happening around him.
Of course, the droids were designed
this way in order to provide some
absurd comic relief since there is so
much negativity going on for most of
the films.
You can't be serious constantly with
no humor. Most of the classic
mythological adventures have silly
characters, who appear for no
apparent reason, but to entertain
the audience. However, R2D2 and C3PO
are integral to the overall plot of
Star Wars.
They always seem to be at the center
of what's going on and they always
have a huge impact on what happens.
I have to admit creating R2D2 and C3PO
was very fortuitous for me and I'm very
fortunate for how successful they became
as characters.
I never expected my two simple droids
to be the most iconic and most recognized
robot creatures in the history of cinema.
Star Wars has been a complete surprise
for the whole history of the saga. I will
never understand why Star Wars works so
well with the fans while many of my other
ideas can't find an audience." (Source:

important film maker of all time.)
