George Lucas speaks about Obi-Wan Kenobi from Revenge of the Sith
"You can argue that Obi-Wan is
the most important character from
the films since he's a central
figure in the Star Wars prequels
and introduces the main hero in
the old films to the ways of the
Force.
The main story in the prequels
revolves around Obi-Wan, Anakin
Skywalker and Padme. It's their
adventure in the first trilogy.
I think the prequels are important
because it shows how much influence
Obi-Wan had with what happened
regarding the collapse of galactic
civilization.
Obi-Wan doesn't understand the
significance of his life. You don't
expect to be alive at the time of
the end of days.
You can say Obi-Wan actually causes
the final apocalypse by being unable to
keep Anakin from turning to the dark side.
You can't really say it's a failure
by Obi-Wan because Anakin makes his own
decisions, but in hindsight Obi-Wan
spends nearly two decades in the
wastelands of Tatooine thinking about
how Obi-Wan caused the end of the golden
age for the Old Republic.
It may seem unfair, but Obi-Wan blames
himself for the deaths of ten thousand or
so Jedi and billions of innocent people,
who were slaughtered during the dark times
of the Empire.
Some fans have indicated that Obi-Wan and
Yoda created a bizarre and insane plan to
have Luke Skywalker defeat the Sith when the
entire Jedi Order was not able to defeat the Sith
Order when they had the chance. There's not
much choice.
The events of Revenge of the Sith prove
Obi-Wan and Yoda aren't destined to fulfill
the Jedi prophecy of the one who will bring
balance to the Force by destroying the Sith.
Instead, they desperately hope Luke is the
chosen one. Against all possible odds, their
unlikely scheme works with Anakin destroying
the Sith Order in a way that is so convoluted
that only the Force can comprehend it all."
