George Lucas talks about Obi-Wan Kenobi from The Phantom Menace:

"One of the reasons I was excited about working on the Star Wars prequels was the chance to explore the earlier life of Obi-Wan to show the audience why he ended up all alone in the wilderness of Tatooine. As you can imagine, Obi-Wan blames himself for the collapse of the Old Republic and Jedi Order.

In The Phantom Menace, we see that Obi-Wan is a talented Jedi, who has Anakin Skywalker enter Obi-Wan's life purely by chance and accident.

If Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn hadn't got marooned on Tatooine, then Anakin probably would have lived his whole life as an insignificant slave and never gotten involved in studying the ways of the Force.

We can't really know how destiny would have changed if Anakin had never become a Sith Lord. If Anakin really is the chosen one, then somehow and someway Anakin would have ended up confronting Darth Sidious. Obi-Wan had no idea that the person Anakin considered most to be his father (Palpatine) was the secret Sith Master.

By the time Obi-Wan figures out Palpatine is the greatest political and military genius in the history of the galaxy, it's much too late.

You don't expect to face the most powerful Sith during your life time. It seems to be the will of the Force for Sidious to destroy the Old Republic and Jedi Order with Anakin as his loyal Sith apprentice.

I guess Obi-Wan needed to blame Qui-Gon for Anakin eventually becoming Darth Vader since Qui-Gon is the one who is certain Anakin must become a Jedi.
