George Lucas reminisces about
Darth Maul from The Phantom
Menace:
"Working on the old films was
extremely frustrating because we
never had enough time or money to
get things done right. Most fans
don't realize the old movies were
created on very tiny production
budgets.
The Phantom Menace cost more than
the old films combined. The
problem is that I didn't have much
money when we were producing the
old films.
The Empire Strikes Back was created
based on the profits I received for
A New Hope. Likewise, Return of the
Jedi was filmed from what I earned
from The Empire Strikes Back. With
The Phantom Menace, I finally had
plenty of time and money to get the
light saber duels I had originally
envisioned for the old films, but
wasn't able to achieve.
We were able to spend many months
training Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon Jinn),
Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi) and
Ray Park (Darth Maul) in the exact
fighting methods I wanted for the
Jedi and Sith. The Phantom Menace
showcases the Jedi and Sith at
their respective pinnacle of power.
I wanted the Darth Vader from the
old films to move quick and agile
like Darth Maul, but it was
impossible to accomplish back then
because we couldn't afford to
design a costume for Vader, which
would allow Vader to fight in the
dynamic way I wanted.
That's the main reason you don't
see the Vader in the mask and armor
hunting the Jedi at the end of
Revenge of the Sith because there
would be a continuity problem in
the light saber fighting styles
between the new Vader and the old
Vader.
Darth Maul is able to
capture the vision I have for
how the best Sith would really
battle in a light saber duel."
